Don't listen
to whoever wrote the description of trip number one! If you can only afford
to do one trip, THIS IS THE ONE! After all this trip has been run
every year since Honest Bob started running these things because of popular
demand. This one has more packed into two days than a lot of weeklong
trips do, yet you will feel relaxed more than rushed.
We will meet in Madison on Saturday morning for our ride to Sun Prairie
for the Sweet Corn Festival. We haven't done this route or this time of
year for several years, and for those of you who remember last year's
Madison trip, you will be happy to know that this is the DRY season. The
terrain is largely flat with the occasional challenging hill and the ride
to Sun Prairie is only about 22 miles.
There will be ample time to rest, refuel, and be entertained and the Sweet
Corn Festival before turning around for the ride back. We take a slightly
shorter route back for a total of about 35 miles for the day. We have
arranged for a car to come back and pick up riders who want to shorten
the ride in the past so this may be an option for those who need it.
On our way to the hotel some participants may want to stop at one of the
farm markets or the Whole Foods store to pick up something for tonight's
picnic. Others make their specialty dish the night before and bring it
in a cooler. In any event you will get the chance to sample everyone's
creations at the picnic on the grounds of the American Players Theater
in Spring Green.
As usual those who are willing to head to the theater a little early will
start grilling meat, chicken, veggies, fish, or just about anything else
edible that you would like. When the rest of the group arrives and sets
up our picnic tables with the tablecloth and place settings and all the
dishes to pass the food will be ready to come off the grill.
After more good food than you thought you could eat we will walk up the
hill through the woods to the theater where we have tickets to see "London
Assurance". Those who have been there know that the APT is one of
the most talented theater troops anywhere. What they are doing in the
woods of Wisconsin is beyond me, but I'm glad they are there. What a setting
to see a play under the stars and moon. You will sleep well tonight.
On Sunday we rest our leg muscles and work the upper body with a 9 mile
canoe trip down the Wisconsin River. There are ample sandbars for taking a
short lunch break or just to cool off with a quick swim. After we are
shuttled back to our cars we say goodbye for another season, unless of
course folks agree to meet up are a fall color tour.
I'm open to ideas.
