Amishland - Howe, IN August 6-8 Approx. $200

We will join the Amishland and Lakes ride in Amish country Friday and Saturday, then venture off on our own to the Checkerberry Inn for swimming, tennis, croquet, and some of the best eating this side of
New York.
Many of you will know this tour from past years and why change a good thing. For this tour we join the Amish Land and Lakes ride out of the Howe Military Academy in Howe, IN. There will be hundreds of riders with the usual maps, arrows on the road, rest/food stops, and sag vehicles, but this ride also includes and ice cream social and available massage after the ride (at an additional cost).

We will meet at the academy on Friday evening and check into our dorm rooms. Yes, these are cadet rooms and are really plain. In fact we have to bring our own bedding and towels, but it keeps the cost way down. There is a non-supported warm up ride available on Friday evening of about 20 miles (no rest stops or sag vehicles, but there will be plenty of bikers on the route). Remember to bring a fan if the weather is warm because the dorm rooms aren't air-conditioned.

On Saturday morning the real ride starts and heads directly into Amish country. You might see as many horse and buggies as you do bikes on this day. The riding is relatively flat and distance options range from about 35 to 70 miles. The longer route will take you through Shipshawana where you can visit the Menhoff Museum and learn more about the Amish way of life.

After the ride we pack up and leave the academy and head to the Checkerberry Inn. Tonight will make up for the Spartan accommodations of Friday night. Swim in the pool or play tennis on the court in the back yard, or play croquet on the regulation court in front of the Inn. Rooms are spacious and luxurious (and yes they do have air conditioning). We'll have dinner (included in the price) in the small French restaurant at the inn, where the herbs and spices used in the meal were probably growing in the garden that afternoon. It is a relaxed multi-course meal that will leave you feeling pampered and satisfied.

Sunday you can choose to mount your bike again and join the big ride into the hills and lakes area of lower Michigan, or you can just sleep in late and enjoy the luxury of the Inn before taking a car tour of the Amish area on your way back home. The Sunday ride options are up to 60 miles.
